The Mo’o (Hawaiian Lizard or Dragon) is a powerful, kupua, a shape-shifting spirit associated with water and protection.Deeply rooted in mo'olelo, they are often seen as the guardians of freshwater sources like ponds, waterfalls, and streams.

3 Things to Know

  • The Sacred Guardian: Mo’o are considered ‘aumakua (ancestral guardians) that ensure the fertility and health of the land. In many legends, they appear as beautiful women or monstrous dragons that protect the water "givers of life."

  • Signs of Presence: It is a traditional belief that you can tell if a Mo’o is home by the water’s appearance. If the water is greenish-yellow or covered in foam, the Mo’o is present and should be left in peace.

  • Respect the Water: To respect the Mo’o is to respect the water itself. Always enter natural freshwater areas with a quiet mind and leave the environment exactly as you found it—taking nothing and leaving nothing behind.
